Dressing for a Mood with Ropes Of Holland

Lindsey Holland

ROPES OF HOLLAND

I launched Ropes of Holland in January 2012 as a way out of the horrible pile of University work I was lodged under. I wanted a place to voice my opinion and love for fashion and design, and so Ropes of Holland was born.

Now I’m no stranger to feeling low, anxious or worried. It comes in waves, and at various times in my life. Sometimes I can control it, sometimes I can’t. And I don’t know a single woman who doesn’t feel this on some level too.

I work for myself, which can be a blessing and a curse. Sure, it’s amazingly flexible and exciting at times but what happens if I’m feeling low? There is only me to motivate myself, to push through the day, to continue to work hard; this one-man-band has to get herself up, get ready for the day and tackle anything that might be scary, head on. And regardless of being self-employed or not, this is the same for everyone in some capacity.

I’ve been thinking a lot recently about what things can affect my mood, or more specifically, make my mood brighter when I’m feeling really ‘off’. It’s clear to see that it’s taking time to look after yourself in the small ways that really matter and can turn your day around. So aside from crawling back into bed and wallowing in self pity (and chocolate), one of the most useful things I came up with, and have started to really put into practice, is getting dressed.

Wear something that makes you feel amazing. Regardless of whether you’re actually feeling amazing or not, dig out your favorite trench coat, or the best fitting jeans you own and put together an outfit you really love. I realised that dressing can really affect my mood. If you’re having an off day whether you work from home, or it’s a weekend, don’t sit around in your comfy clothes, make an effort to get dressed up and it’ll lift your mood I promise! For me, I find that comfy clothes are for self care days, not for finding motivation.

I was finding that working from home and being on my won when feeling low wasn’t helping at all. Instead, I now try to co-work with others, or head out to a coffee shop which means I HAVE to get dressed to leave the house. Small steps!

I hope this has been helpful to you and I hope you can try some of my tried and tested tips for when you’re feeling a bit rubbish.
