Here at La Redoute we’re delighted to be able to bring you coveted Veja trainers. This brand is designed and managed in France but the production takes place in Brazil. This isn’t the company’s attempt to lower manufacturing costs - exactly the opposite. This hip French eco-brand carries out all the production in Brazil under Fairtrade conditions ensuring the workers and suppliers receive a fair wage for their work.
Fairtrade shoes are pretty hard come by, but these shoes top that as they’re organic too. The cotton is farmed and harvested in Northeast Brazil and is overseen by the IBD (Instituto Biodinâmico for Rural Development), the leading certified Brazilian organic control institution. The natural rubber for the trainer soles comes from wild (naturally organic) rubber trees in the Amazon. The Seringueiros, who live in the forest, harvest and process the rubber directly allowing them to sell a semi-finished product at a higher price.
But what’s really attractive about Veja is this eco-brand is genuinely stylish too. The shoe form, shape and colours are all perfectly designed to go with any smart-casual or street wear look. So often Fairtrade clothing maintains a certain look that doesn’t suit city and town life. Veja trainers have really cornered the market here. They are comfortable, stylish and practical and as the saying goes: ‘They won’t cost the earth.’
